Superbowl XLI Preview: Colts vs. Bears
Two different teams will make this Superbowl a great one to watch. The Indianapolis Colts will be the favorite in this year’s Superbowl XLI against the Chicago Bears. The Colts have the great offense with Quarterback #18 Payton Manning and wide-out#88 Marvin Harrison. The Bears have the great defense that likes to rip the ball out and cause a lot of turnovers. This Super bowl will come down to field position, running the football third down conversions, and turnovers. Payton Manning knows that they [Colts] must try establish a solid running game if they expect to win the Superbowl. Running-backs of the Colts #29[(r) Joseph Addai (LSU)], and #33 Dominic Rhodes, must get positive yards [must combine for 150yds.] so that Payton Manning is not forced into third and longs. Manning is not that mobile in the pocket and likes to change plays [audible] at the line to throw a wrench into the defense.
Payton Manning is all about timing when throwing the football. The Chicago Bears want to disrupt his timing with timely blitzes. Manning likes to check down and throw to his tight-end #44 Dallas Clark. Clark has made a lot of big catches in this year’s playoffs down the middle of the field. The Bears will try to take that away with Linebacker #54 Brian Urlacher. Urlacher and the Bears front seven will try to cause a lot of havic for Payton Manning and the Colts up front. Wide-outs Harrison, and #87 Reggie Wayne will try to stretch the field on the Bears’ average secondary.
The Bears offense will all fall mostly on Quarterback #8 Rex Grossman. All Grossman has to do is manage this Bears offense, and not manage to lose it with turnovers! The Bears combination of running backs with #20 Thomas Jones and #32 Cedric Benson can take some of the weight off of Grossman’s shoulders by running the football well. Running the football for solid yards will help Rex Grossman's play-action pass.
The team that stops the run the most will win this Superbowl unless turnovers factor in. Grossman has to play smart and not try to force balls into coverage. Bears tight-end #88 Desmond Clark could play a big roll for Grossman when he needs to check down on third downs. Bears wide-out and deep threat #80 Benard Berrian has to make plays if the Bears expect to win. Along with other Bears wide-out #87 Muhsin Mohammad must make plays. The most important aspect of any Superbowl is field position and turnovers. The Chicago Bears have the edge in those two categories. On special teams the Bears have the most explosive player in football to give them great field position, in #23 Devin Hester. Hester can change the pace of any game with just one cut on a punt, or kick-off return. Hester has had some problems hanging on to the football recently, however. He has to stay focused and know his run can or will put points on the board for the Chicago Bears. If this Super bowl comes down to field goals then you have to give the edge to Mr. Clutch from South Dakota State, the Colts#4 Adam Vinateri.
If Grossman does not turnover the football by throwing, or fumbling the Bears have a great shot to win this Superbowl. The key elements of the game favor the Bears not the Colts.
It is the Bears’ game too win, not lose unless they beat themselves.
